Canada School Shooting: Nine Dead

A shooting at a school in Canada has resulted in multiple fatalities. The Ottawa Parliament canceled its sessions after holding a moment of silence and receiving condolences from political party leaders. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney canceled his trip to the Munich Security Conference to address the situation. Carney noted that the Tumbler Ridge shooting is the second deadliest school massacre in Canadian history since 1989. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have identified 18-year-old Jesse Vanrootselaar as the alleged shooter, who died by suicide. The attack left nine people dead, including the shooter, and 27 injured. Among the victims are five students, a teacher, and the shooter's mother and half-brother. Assistant Commissioner Dwayne McDonald stated that Vanrootselaar was assigned male at birth but identified as a woman after beginning her transition six years ago. Police had previously responded to calls at her residence for mental health issues and had seized firearms. Police received the first reports of the shooting at 1:20 PM local time on Tuesday. Officers arrived on the scene within two minutes. According to their account, shots were fired in their direction as they approached the school. They entered the building within minutes and located the deceased shooter, who appeared to have self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Two firearms were recovered at the school: a rifle and a modified handgun.
